Obtaining optimal protection for your intellectual works’ is the goal of Bart van Trier, Dutch and European Patent Attorney at Vriesendorp & Gaade. To this end, it is necessary to understand the expectations and wishes of a client. This requires a good cooperation with the client. The resulting patent application comprises all aspects of the invention and is tailor made for the purpose as intended by the client.

The daily activities of Bart comprise among other advising on the possibilities of acquiring patent rights, drafting and prosecuting patent applications and drafting infringement opinions. Additionally, he has also conducted various advisory proceedings and oppositions related to the defence or nullification of patents, and has been involved several times in judicial invalidity and/or infringement proceedings.

In April 2015, Bart joined the department of Mechanical Engineering of Vriesendorp & Gaade. He was sworn in as a Dutch Patent Attorney in 2012. In 2015, he passed the European Qualifying Examination and was registered as a European Patent Attorney. In 2022, Bart became one of the directors of Vriesendorp & Gaade.

Background information

Bart studied Applied Physics at the Fontys Hogescholen in Eindhoven, and Biomedical Engineering at the Eindhoven University of Technology. In 2005, he obtained his Bachelor’s degree with a specialisation in Medical Technology, and in 2008, he obtained his Master’s Degree in Medical Engineering with a specialisation in Clinical Physics. His first graduation project related to the treatment of liver metastases through Radiofrequency Interstitial Thermotherapy (RFITT). For his second graduation project he contributed to the implementation of radiotherapeutical stereotactic treatment of lung tumours on the basis of a 4D CT-scan. Furthermore, he contributed to improving  the durability in respect of water usage in pig slaughtering houses, and to verifying electronic fields for radiotherapeutic purposes.

Expertise

Because of the combination of the studies Applied Physics and Medical Engineering, Bart has in depth knowledge of various technical fields. In addition, whilst working in the capacity of a patent attorney, he gained further experience in various technical fields. He has experience in and knowledge of physics, mechanical engineering, medical technology, control systems, solar energy systems, process technology, domestic appliances, offshore technology and mechatronics.
