Bas Peters, MSc

Partner/Owner, Dutch, European and UPC Patent Attorney
Bas Peters

"Protecting intellectual property requires a close collaboration with the client. It is important that we understand what the client intends to achieve with the registration of specific intellectual property rights"

"This understanding allows us to provide optimal advise on the possibilities and strategies for obtaining said rights. This applies to both the type of intellectual property rights (Patents, Utility Models, Designs, Trademarks, etc.) for obtaining the desired protection, as well as the countries for which the client would like to obtain the intellectual property rights. We strive to discuss this in a personal consultation with the client, preferably at the location of the client."

As a patent attorney, Bas mainly drafts and prosecutes patent applications and designs. The success of a patent depends to a great extent on a good description of the invention in the patent application. On the one hand, a description is sufficiently broad to provide a sufficient scope of protection against competitors and which can not be easily circumvented. On the other hand, it has to be sufficiently detailed so that the patent is not easily invalidated during court proceedings. To draft a good description of the invention, it is essential that the patent attorney thoroughly undestands the invention and the possible applications of the invention. That is why we strive to discuss the subject of the invention extensively in a personal consultation with the inventor, prior to drafting the patent application. Usually, this consultation takes place at the location of the client so that prototypes and drawings can be viewed to better understand the invention.
